Counselling For Adults

It’s when you sense, or realise, that things can’t remain the same and yet you feel frozen, unable to act, and you don’t know what to do. A personal crisis might leave you feeling powerless and anxious. Then you find that the ways in which you generally deal with problems aren’t working: the people you’d usually turn to for support – your partner, family, friends, colleagues – can’t give you what you need, despite their best intentions; they may even be part of the problem, or they might be too involved with the issues you’re facing. You might also experience a deterioration in your physical and mental health. It’s not uncommon to feel anxious, depressed or emotionally fragile. This is when counselling can help.

As your counsellor, my role isn’t to offer advice or to tell you what to do, but to help you find clarity about why you’re experiencing this ‘frozen’ feeling, and how to uncover new ways of living. Counselling sessions provide a space to find, explore and understand new ways of dealing with the issues or problems you’re facing.

I provide friendly individual counselling to adults, and my initial half hour is free.

In this first session we’ll meet to consider what brings you to counselling and what kind of help feels right for you. From that point on, each session will last for fifty minutes and take place weekly, or sometimes less frequently. We may agree a specific number of sessions, which can be increased or decreased as appropriate.

I work with a wide range of issues. My areas of special interest include:

Bereavement

Domestic abuse

Emotional regulation

Estrangement

General anxiety

Identity issues

Long-term health conditions

Loss and Grief

Low self-esteem

Narcissistic abuse

Relationships

Suicidal thoughts

Trauma

Victims of crime

Work and career issues

Counselling For Writers and Artists

I also offer a specialist counselling service for writers and artists engaging with personal experience through their work. It might be the specific issues you’re exploring that you want to bring to counselling; it might be the feelings your current work is giving rise to now; or how people you know, including those your work may be about, might react, should they read or see your work.  Equally, it might be the relationship between your actual experience and the writing or art you produce. You may want to consider how you exercise self-care whilst engaging with these experiences. It could even be a combination of any or all of the above, or, of course, something else entirely.
